SUMMARY:Spirits at Stowe
DESCRIPTION:Spirits at Stowe considers spiritualism as a tool of resistance among radicals and reformers of the 19th century. \nThrough contact with spirits\, radical women claimed authority to speak the unspeakable\, especially the right to full control and autonomy over their own bodies and families. Throughout the tour\, we will delve into the historic\, social\, and political context of the 19th century and explore the role of spiritualism in the lives of reformers\, suffragists\, and Black activists\, including Harriet Jacobs\, Frederick Douglass\, and Harriet Wilson. \nDuring the tour\, the house is “set” to reflect a Spiritualist setting. It takes place later in the evening and is by (electric) candlelight. Participants on the tour will observe and engage with materials and primary sources related to spiritualism\, including a planchette\, spiritualist newspapers\, seance accounts\, and letter excerpts from leading 19th century activists. \nSpirits at Stowe deals with themes such as violence\, sexuality\, and reproductive rights. It is not recommended for children under 13.  \n  \nWhat is spiritualism?  \nBroadly speaking\, spiritualism is the belief that an individual’s awareness persists after death and can be contacted by the living. During Spirits at Stowe\, we discuss the histories of multiple spiritualist traditions in U.S. history\, and how these beliefs helped inspire\, nourish\, and connect politically radical individuals and communities – paying special attention to abolitionism\, women’s rights\, labor rights\, and the intersection among them. \n

SUMMARY:Reading for Change
DESCRIPTION:A virtual reading group curated around our Stowe Prize for Literary Activism winners\, shortlist\, and mission-aligned books. \n\n  \n\nFREE\nVirtual – invite friends across the country!\n6:00 – 7:00 PM EST\nNo requirement to read the book beforehand!\nRiverbend Bookshop: Get a 10% discount our Stowe Prize books! Mention us at check-out or use STOWEFORCHANGE for online purchases.\n\n\nThe Intentions of Thunder gathers\, for the first time\, the essential work from across Patricia Smith’s decorated career. Here\, Smith’s poems\, affixed with her remarkable gift of insight\, present a rapturous ode to life. With careful yet vaulting movement\, these poems traverse the redeeming landscape of pain\, confront the frightening revelations of history\, and disclose the joyous possibilities of the future. The result is a profound testament to the necessity of poetry—all the careful witness\, embodied experience\, and bristling pleasure that it bestows—and of Smith’s necessary voice. \nLyrical and sly\, meditative and volcanic\, The Intentions of Thunder stunningly explores the fullness of living. The inimitable poetry of Patricia Smith radiates in The Intentions of Thunder—reaffirming Smith’s place as one of the indispensable poets of our time. \n\nAntoinette Brim-Bell\, Connecticut’s 8th State Poet Laureate\, is the author of three full-length poetry collections:  These Women You Gave Me\, Icarus in Love\, and Psalm of the Sunflower.  A sought-after speaker\, editor\, educator\, and consultant\, Brim-Bell is a Professor of English at Connecticut State Community College\, Capital.

Simmons Jr.\, Artistic Director of the HartBeat Ensemble\, will stage a dramatic reading of selections of the Phillips Manuscript. Cat White\, Director of Historic Collections at the Stowe Center\, will introduce the project and provide context for each passage. Dr. Camesha Scruggs\, professor at Central Connecticut State University\, will then facilitate a conversation about the manuscript and our Stowe Prize winning novel\, Percival Everett’s James. \n \nThe Stowe Prize Series continues with a powerful exploration of history\, storytelling\, and the enduring struggle for freedom. \nThis year\, we bring into conversation two remarkable works: the recently discovered Phillips Manuscript\, which documents the extraordinary life of Dr. William H. Phillips\, and Percival Everett’s award-winning novel James. The Phillips Manuscript will be on display at each gathering. \nBorn enslaved in Virginia in 1841\, Dr. Phillips went on to become a nationally respected minister at Shiloh Baptist Church in Philadelphia. His life touches on pivotal events of 19th-century America and illuminates the resilience\, courage\, and intellect of Black Americans before and after emancipation. His story resonates with the themes of Everett’s James\, which reframes the story of Huck Finn through the eyes of Jim. \nTogether\, these works invite us to reflect on the essential question:What is the role of storytelling and narrative in our understanding of history and our current culture?

As editor of Stowe’s religious writings for Oxford University Press\, Claudia Stokes will examine Stowe’s forgotten religious works and will present Stowe as the first feminist theologian. Decades before such landmark works of religious feminism as Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s The Woman’s Bible (1895)\, Stowe sought to highlight the importance of women in scripture and repeatedly depicted the deity as a loving mother. Stowe was the daughter\, wife\, and sister of ministers\, but in her writings she boldly presented Christianity as feminine and female-centered. \n\nDr. Claudia Stokes is Professor of English at Trinity University. She specializes in nineteenth-century American women writers and is currently editing Harriet Beecher Stowe’s religious writings for the Collected Works of Harriet Beecher Stowe\, to be published by Oxford University Press. \n\n \nPRESENTING SPONSORLaura & Barry KorobkinADVOCATING SPONSORKatherine Kane & John KelseySUPPORTING SPONSORFrancine & Stephan Christiansen \n\n\n \nFRIEND SPONSORSMary Ellen & Bob WhiteDiane Pflugrad Foley
