Because of the support of Friends of Stowe and the work of our extraordinary volunteers, the Stowe Center cultivates and stewards Harriet’s Backyard, a beautiful green space in the Asylum Hill Neighborhood. We’re especially grateful to Judith Lohman and David Reik for a recent gift to support the addition of an expanded garden on the north side of the Day House where the new meandering path meets the circular drive.
Last year, Trinity Academy of Hartford found its new home at Immanuel Congregational Church. When Karen received a call from our new neighbors earlier this year, they shared that the elementary school only had a paved area for recess and asked if they could utilize Harriet’s Backyard for their students to play. The answer was a resounding, “YES!”

That yes has led to a growing partnership between our organizations, where the Stowe Center grounds have become a play space as well as an extension of the Trinity Academy classroom. In May, students joined Cindy Cormier, Director of Historic Buildings & Landscape, and Stowe Center garden volunteers in our gardens as part of their unit on plants. Together they planted, explored, and learned about the care it takes to help a garden grow.
