Event Series: Harriet’s Hearth

Join Jessica Dickens for a hands-on workshop exploring the history of corn husk dolls, their cultural significance, and their place in literature and the lives of Black children across generations.

Jessica will guide participants in making two dolls: one to keep and one to give away in the spirit of holiday giving. Along the way, she will share an excerpt from This Here Is Love by Princess Joy Perry, inviting reflection on the connections between storytelling, history, and handmade traditions.

Leave with your creations, a history handout, a reflection prompt, and a copy of the reading excerpt, plus an invitation to share what you’ve learned through the gift of a doll.

Jessica Dickens, Artist

Through her lived experience as a Black woman, Jessica Dickens has taken the art projects the Stowe Center has given her to a level of profound insight, with historical and contemporary impact. The Stowe Center has worked with Dickens for four years as our Stowe Prize artist–and because of the interpretation she offers–breathtaking art informed by both historical research and lived experience–we have returned to her repeatedly. After reading This Here Is Love, our 2026 Stowe Prize winner, she suggested the corn husk doll workshop.
