Stowe Center’s Third Annual Intergenerational Tour
Inheriting Freedom is designed to be enjoyed by visitors ages 6 and above

HARTFORD, Conn. –  The Stowe Center for Literary Activism is pleased to announce, Inheriting Freedom, a dynamic, family-friendly event held on the second Saturday of the month, April through August, from 3:30 to 4:30 PM at the Stowe Center, 77 Forest Street, Hartford, CT.

Join us for Inheriting Freedom: An Intergenerational Tour About Family, Freedom, and Education!

Learn about the Black abolitionist Frederick Douglass and the white anti-slavery author Harriet Beecher Stowe. We’ll explore their stories from the time they were young children until they became famous authors, paying special attention to the importance of love, family, and education in their lives.

Our interactive, conversation-based tour is designed to explore some of the hardest moments in U.S. history in an empowering, age-appropriate way. Step back in time with us; touch and hold historical objects and documents that help this history come alive, and join in a conversation about how all of us have the power to create change.

From a Girl Scout Troop visiting from Bethlehem, Connecticut in November 2025: “We were absolutely thrilled with the tour! I honestly didn’t know what to expect but it absolutely exceeded expectations. I thought you all were fantastic tour guides and handled very difficult and poignant subject matter with grade and confidence. It was exactly what my girls needed to hear especially in these trying times.”
